It is well known that oral pathology is an essential bridge between basic and clinical science in dental field. Although oral pathology has been introduced to Korean dental science since 1945, there is not yet presented about oral pathologic history. The purpose of this study was to summarize and to introduce Korean oral pathologic history in serial form for Korean oral pathologist.
Recently, extensive research has been performed in the field of orthopedic medicine to develop cell-based therapies for the restoration of injured bone tissue. But there has been rarely reported about rehabilitaton of oral and maxillofacial bone defect using self-derived osteoblasts. Normal human osteoblast cell(NHost) was previously established into marrow-derived human mesenchymal stem cells for their capacity to proliferate and differentiate into osteoblasts under various culture conditions. The purpose of this study was to examine proliferation and differentiation of NHosts effected by growth factors with ALP activity and RT-PCR. After NHosts were cultured under basal and osteogenic medium at 37℃ and 5% CO2, they were analyzed by ALP activity and RT-PCR. BMP-2 under osteogenic medium decreased growth rate of NHosts compared to under osteogenic medium. BMP-2 under osteogenic medium induced osteoblastic differentiation in NHosts by increased ALP activity. The differentiating capacity of NHosts under osteogenic medium showed that NHosts expressed higher mRNA expression levels of OSX and OCN, while that of RUNX2 decreased after BMP-2 treatment. It suggested that NHosts having characteristics of osteoprecursor cells might be more advanced in their osteogenesis development by BMP-2, making NHosts an interesting biological tool for treatment of skeletal defects and diseases of oral and maxillofacial bone.
The dental infections have been increased due to the widespread overuse and exposure to antibiotics. One of the well-known pathogens is S. aureus The pathogenic properties of S. aureus is associated with the virulence gene. The objective of this study is to investigate the distribution of virulence gene of S. aureus which may contribute to the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections. 54 strains of S. aureus were separated from saliva taken from 129 outpatients diagnosed with periodontitis from Jun. to Dec., 2010 in Seoul. 44 (46.6%) and 13 (31.7%) strains of them were obtained from 88 and 41 outpatients from the S and E dental clinics, respectively. Then, the distribution of virulence gene and genetic diversity were analyzed with the PCR technique. The result of the S. aureus isolates possessed coagulase gene and showed six polymorphism types 390~470 bp (1.8%), 550~633 bp (3.7%), 630~714 bp (9.3%), 715~795 bp (20.4%), 796~876 bp (40.7%) and 877~957 bp(22.2%) due to variable numbers of tandem repeats present within the gene. In this study it will be anticipated that this study can contribute to establish efficiently the countermeasure about the prevention and treatment of antibiotic bacterial infections.
The population of patients with antiplatelet treatment is expanding globally with the rising prevalence of cardiovascular disease and increasing use of percutaneous coronoary interventions. While antiplatelet agents have revolutionized the management of atherosclerotic disease and its thromotic complications, the potential of bleeding remains an inherent risk. Dentists are more likely to stop antiplatelet therapy before dental extraction because they think that the patient is at high risk for bleeding. However stopping or altering antiplatelet therapy may expose such patients to the risk of a thromboembolic event such as thromboembolism, myocardial infarction, or cerebrovascular accidents particulary in patients wirh drug-eluting stent. In this study, we report 3cases that were perfomed dental extraction in patients receiving single or dual antiplatelet therapy without immediate and late postextraction bleeding and reviewed the literature on dental extraction in patients receiving antiplatelet therapy. We concluded that dental extractions may be safely performed in patients receiving single or dual antiplatelet therapy when appropriate local hemostatic measures are taken, thus averting thrombotic risk of temporary antiplatelet discontinuation
Although the mechanism of the abnormal calcification in the calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) was not elucidated so far, it has been known that the ghost cells are closely related to the calcification, producing dystrophic globular cementum-like materials, comparable to pilomatricoma in epithelium1). Here, we presented a case of COC occurred in left maxillary canine area of 23 years old female, exhibiting a collection of aberrant ossification admixed with basophilic ghost cells in comparison with seven cases of COC. In the polarizing microscope observation with Masson trichrome stain the present case clearly disclosed the typical birefringence of bony tissue, stained red in von Gieson stain, indicating the collagenous backbone. Some ghost cells showed the features of interdigitating epithelial attachments, empty spaces of nuclei, and reticular basophilic cytoplasms, which were similar to the basophilic ghost cells of philomatricoma. The present case demonstrated the aberrant ossification by basophilic ghost cells in COC similar to the ossification of pilomatricoma
We previously prepared a standardized and purified extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza, PF2401-SF, and showed that it protected against hepatic injury more effectively than ethanol based extraction. In this study, we determined the hepatoprotective mechanisms of PF2401-SF in vivo. Hepatic injury was induced in mice by using carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Treatment with PF2401-SF (1 or 10 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly reduced the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in the plasma. PF2401-SF treatment resulted in further elevation of the CCl4-induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression, which contributed to the PF2401-SF-mediated liver protection. Additionally, PF2401-SF treatment significantly reduced the c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) phosphorylation induced by CCl4. Taken together, these results suggest that the protective effect of PF2401-SF, a standardized fraction of S. miltiorrhiza, against CCl4-induced hepatic injury in mice arises from its induction effect on HO-1 and inhibitory effect on JNK phosphorylation.
Abstract. The keratoameloblastoma is a benign lesion of the jaws, which is a rare histologic variant of the ameloblastoma. There is a variation in the histopathologic appearance of reported cases under the appellation of keratoameloblastoma. The keratoameloblastma has usually keratin formation by the ameloblastomatous epithelium and varies in size. English literature reports only 14 cases of keratoameloblastma. We described an additional case of the tumor developed in the right mandible of a 26-year-old woman. It was presented as an expansile and radiolucent lesion. Histologically, solid tumor islands were seen with some microcystic space within a fibrous stroma resembling an ameloblastoma. In addidion, a hyperchromatic columnar basal cell layer and parakeratin within the microcyst simulating an odontogenic keratocyst
Whereas calcium deposition in soft tissues is not uncommon, highly-structured, identified as mature cancellous bone within soft tissues is not frequent. Here, we report an usual case of mature cancellous bone in cheek subcutaneous tissue in 15-year-old Korean male. Microscopically the cancellous bone was encompassed by epithelial cells, which was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining with cytokeratin AE1/3. The present mature cancellous bone in subcutaneous tissue could be originated from oral epithelium.
