This study aimed to compare chin deviation in angle measurement on posteroanterior(PA) cephalogram and computed tomography (CT). Chin deviation was assessed as menton(Me) deviation in angle measurement on PA cephalogram and CT images of 35 patients who had orthognathic surgery (19 male and 16 female with average age of 22.1±3.33yr). The difference between the Me deviation was calculated and statistical analysis was performed to compare the deviation direction and asymmetry severity on the two imaging modalities. There was statistically significant difference in the difference of Me deviation between PA cephalogram and CT by one-simple t-test (p<.05). The mean difference of Me deviation was 2.21°± 1.84°. The maximum difference of Me deviation was 8.64°. There were statistical agreements in the deviation direction (k =0.82, p<.05) and in the severity of facial asymmetry (k =0.37, p<.05). The difference of the deviation direction was detected in 2 patients (5.71 %). The difference of the severity of facial asymmetry was in 15 patients (42.86%). The chin deviation in angle measurement might be different between PA cephalogram and CT in some patients.
Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF, CCN2) is one of the multi-functional secreted proteins which belong to CCN family of cysteine-rich growth factors. CTGF is known to have pivotal roles in embryonic endochondral ossification but its role in relevance to periodontitis is never been determined. To identify new molecular mediators associated with periodontitis-induced bone resorption, we have analyzed publicly available GEO database and found the markedly augmented CTGF mRNA expression in periodontitis gingival tissues. The existence of CTGF significantly enhanced mature osteoclasts survival which accompanied by reduction in TUNEL-positive nuclei and PARP cleavage. These results may provide another line of evidence the CTGF mediated prolonged osteoclast survival and subsequent increased bone resorption in the periodontitis patients.
The purpose of this study is to develop the quantitative PCR(qPCR) assay that would enable the rapid identification and simultaneous detection of six different endodontic pathogenic bacteria in a single reaction. In this study, six pairs of primers for Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Streptococcus mutans, and Staphylococcus aureus and two pairs of housekeeping genes were designed for a multiplex qPCR based on the SYBR Green method. The genomic DNA was extracted from reference strains and submitted to the qPCR reaction. The specificity of the amplified products was analyzed by melting curves. As a result, six distinct melting peaks were identified by the melting curve analysis and all of the target species were simultaneously discriminated. Therefore, the multiplex qPCR assay developed in this study can be used for rapid identification and detection of T. denticola, P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum, P. intermedia, S. mutans, and S. aureus at the same time. In combination with the melting curve analysis, the level of the target species and total bacterial load can be obtained.
Warthin tumor, also known as papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum is a benign neoplasm which occurs mostly in the parotid gland. It is the second most common benign neoplasm of the parotid gland, following pleomorphic adenoma. In occasion, the size of neoplasm grows slowly, and there is no symptom, except swelling. To prevent the recurrence, some surgeons prefer superficial parotidectomy, but the others prefer local resection with minimal surrounding tissue due to its low recurrence rate. We present a case of Warthin tumor of 55-year-old male.
Neurilemmomas, also known as schwannomas, are typically benign, well-encapsulated, slow-growing tumors originating from Schwann cells which encompass peripheral motor and sensory nerves. Neurilemmomas in parapharyngeal space (PPS) are very rare, but they can occasionally originate from the last four cranial nerves and autonomic nerves. In this article, we report the rare case of a 47-year-old male presenting solitary neck swelling and hoarseness. After computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, we performed complete surgical excision by a transcervical approach under general anesthesia. In the histologic examination, Neurilemmoma was diagnosed. The patient did not complain of any specific complications, showed good prognosis without recurrence or pain up to date.
Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (Ca ex PA) is an uncommon malignant tumor. It is an aggressive salivary carcinoma, arising from a primary or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma (PA). The most common clinical presentation of Ca ex PA is a firm mass in the parotid gland. Here we report a case of Ca ex PA, arising from a recurrent benign PA in the right parotid gland, in a 70-year old female patient. The lesion was first diagnosed as a PA and a superficial parotidectomy was performed. Re-operation was performed for recurrent PA. The second recurrence was diagnosed as Ca ex PA.
