Purpose: The aims of this study was to provide problem solving case by describing the adversities and corresponding adaptation means of PST within limited time schedule for the National Children’s Sports Meet. Methods: Three hours of PST per week for two consecutive weeks was administered to 17 youth athletes participating in National Children's Sports Meet. Results: Although some adversities were raised, real competition results were quite successful with more gains in gold medal and new record set. In addition, athletes and administration officers were quite satisfied with PST program. Some lessons obtained from this case were also extracted. Conclusion: Although results firstly showed the effectiveness of PST program, this result does not necessarily indicate the cause-and-effect of the PST program. Limitation including this warning, implications and some suggestions were made for future research.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the differences among exercise self-schema, exercise imagery, exercise self efficacy and physical activity by gender, age, stages of changes and to identify structural relationship among exercise self-schema, exercise imagery, exercise self efficacy and physical activity of adults. Methods: Six hundred questionnaires were initially distributed to college students, company employees and sports center members. Among them, total 569 were finally used in this study(male: 288, female:281, Mage=38.36). Exercise self-schema inventory, exercise imagery inventory, exercise self-efficacy scale and weekly leisure-time exercise questionnaire were revised into Korean and applied in the study. Frequency analysis, analysis of variance, correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were carried out to test the possible relationship among exercise self-schema, exercise imagery, exercise self efficacy and physical activity. All analyses were conducted by SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18. Results: Results indicated that there was significant differences in exercise self-schema, exercise imagery, exercise self efficacy, and physical activity by gender, age, and the stages of exercise changes. And results indicated that there was positive relationship among exercise self-schema, exercise imagery, exercise self efficacy and physical activity of adults. Conclusion: This study suggests that cognitive intervention strategies aimed at exercise self-schema and exercise imagery could be significant to promote physical activity.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of achievement goal orientation on psychological skills of Korean high school Taekwondo(TKD) athletes. Methods: The subjects were 268 high school Taekwondo athletes (207 males and 61 females). In order to investigate the validity and reliability of the questionnaire exploratory factor analysis was conducted. Descriptive statistic analysis, ANOVAs, Sheffe post-hoc tests and regression analyses were performed. Results: Results were as follows. 1) There was no gender differences in achievement goal orientation were found. However, the difference was shown in skill levels(high vs. low group). 2) There were significant differences between gender and skill level in psychological skills. Task goal orientation in male influenced on th psychological factors such as will power, imagery, self-efficacy, team harmony, concentration, and goal setting, while ego orientation did only on the goal setting. In female, task orientation influenced on will power, imagery, self-efficacy, team harmony, and goal setting, while ego orientation didn’t influence at all, which reflecting the goal setting is a common achievement motivation factor in male and female. Conclusion: Results supported the previous research reflecting the importance of task orientation. In addition, the result also implies that the psychological skills influenced by motivation orientation would differ based upon the characteristics of each sport. Future directions and limitations were discussed.
Purpose: This study tested the health action process approach (HAPA) as a motivational model for physical activity in a longitudinal sample of 483 adults (275 males, 208 females) over a 10 week period. Methods: Participants' action self-efficacy, decision balance for exercise, perceived risk awareness and intention were measured at baseline (Time 1). Maintenance self-efficacy, action planning and action control were measured 5 weeks later (Time 2). Physical activity behavior was measured 10 weeks after baseline (Time 3). Structural equation modeling was used to investigate the HAPA model. Results: The first model showed that intention was a significant predictor of physical activity behavior. The second model, which included the volitional components of the HAPA model, did significantly increased the proportion of behavior explained. The third model showed that intention, maintenance self-efficacy and action control were positive predictors of physical activity behavior. Conclusion: Findings suggest that HAPA provides a useful framework for identifying determinants of physical activity intention and behavior within a group of middle-aged adults.
Purpose: this study was to gain a full understanding of the experiences of sports counselor trainees during counseling training. For this purpose, this study explored the experiences and the meaning of counselors’ development. Methods: A phenomenological study was utilized and 6 participants who had several experiences of sports counseling were selected for the study. 3 categories, 8 subcategories, and 24 subjects were derived from in depth interviews and focus group interview. Data were analyzed based on the open coding, axial coding, and selective coding procedure of phenomenological theory. Results: First, trainees were motivated to introduce psychological skills to athletes, at the same time they were worried about immaturity of themselves as counselors. Second, trainees faced the difficulties of reality such as doubts about the effectiveness of counseling, differences between on-site and lectures. Also, trainees should apply different counseling techniques depending on the speciality of sport. Third, trainees grew through a variety of experiences as sport counselors. They preached the importance of sport counseling to the organizations such as professional teams and schools. Conclusion: Trainees developed their skills and professional counseling abilities through their training. This research may be used as basic data for counselors to adapt to sports setting, and to achieve better and professional counseling.
Purpose: This study aims to provide the review delivering rationale and reason for safe and effective treatment against aging through exercise and motor learning and to present a new awareness and perspectives that can lead to a healthy and successful aging. Methods: Web search engines of PUBMED, Web of Knowledge, ERIC, Science Direct were used for mining articles which were related to key words with the combinatiom of ‘aging’, ‘physical activity’, ‘exercise’, ‘neural plasticity’ and ‘cognition’. Results: Aging decreases the capacity of memory, attention, and information processing, motor control & motor learning ability, increase the variability in the behavior level and is a closely related neurodegenerative disease. Reduction and damage of functions to be displayed in physical and mental areas are threatening the quality of life for the elderly. Especially physical activity and exercise is closely related to the neural plasticity, resulting in a change in the structure and function of the nervous system throughout lifetime. Physical activity & exercise regularly is essential element for successful aging and brings about prevention of cognitive impairment and dementia, improvement of vascular function, reduction of obesity, reduction of inflammatory factors, causing an increase of brain health and functionality. Conclusion: An important features of successful aging demonstrate low prevalence, low degree of disability, and high cognitive and physical ability with active lifestyle. Future to develop the arbitration scheme through a variety of approaches, it is necessary to attempt to reduce the negative impact of the decline in cognitive and motor functions.
