Modern masonry buildings are experiencing accelerated degradation due to inherent material limitations and adverse environmental factors. However, conventional physical replacement methods fundamentally undermine the historical authenticity of these heritage structures. This study quantitatively evaluates the preservation efficacy and field applicability of an ethyl silicate consolidant applied to weathered original bricks collected from the Chilgok Gasil Catholic Church. Initially, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the mineralogical stability of the consolidant application, as no swelling clay minerals, which could cause secondary expansion damage, were detected. Experimental results revealed that the application of vacuum impregnation allowed the consolidant to penetrate deeply into the bricks. This treatment demonstrated up to a 96.4% reduction in capillary water absorption and a remarkable 764% increase in compressive strength, thereby significantly improving both internal density and mechanical performance. Furthermore, non-destructive surface treatments (brushing and spraying), designed for practical field conditions where structural dismantling is impossible, successfully formed a stable silica gel network up to 7-8 mm below the surface. These methods proved highly effective for moisture blocking and surface strengthening. Although a temporary decrease in surface lightness due to the wetting effect was observed, the original color gradually recovered over the curing period. In conclusion, ethyl silicate consolidation serves as a highly effective and structurally reliable method for minimizing physical part replacement while preserving the historical authenticity of modern masonry buildings. Future field applications will require precise treatment guidelines accompanied by long-term color monitoring.

This study focuses on the hoecheom of traditional timber-structure houses as a key element reflecting the original techniques of master carpenters. By analyzing the structural components and the factors influencing the roof structure, this study categorizes hoecheom roof structure into five distinct types. The analysis of regional distribution patterns reveals that oejok-cheoma accounts for an overwhelming proportion in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, while golchunyeo-hoecheom was mainly used in the Jeonnam and Gyeongnam regions. Natchun-cheoma shows a concentrated presence in the Gyeongbuk region, influenced by specific topographical conditions and the intentions of the homeowners. In the Chungcheong and Gangwon regions, the distribution ratios of roof structure types vary according to the nature of interactions with adjacent regions. Regarding technical transitions, golchunyeo-hoecheom, which was distributed nationwide during the early Joseon period, was replaced by oejok-cheoma in the central regions during the late Joseon period due to an architectural trend emphasizing material economy and construction efficiency. However, in regions far removed from the capital, the traditional technique of golchunyeo-hoecheom continued to persist instead of adopting these changes. This study holds academic significance by empirically clarifying the regionality of residential architecture through the technical analysis of hoecheom roof structures.

This study aims to empirically investigate the evolution of conservation principles for Korean architectural heritage— transitioning from customary formal reconstruction to value-based conservation centered on the ‘Historic State’—by analyzing the twenty-year conservation process of the Stone Pagoda at the Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan (1999–2019). It specifically examines how international conservation discourses were negotiated and optimized within the specific context of the Korean repair environment to secure ‘Authenticity’. The major findings are as follows. First, a philosophical shift toward the conservation of the ‘Historic State’ was realized by excluding the conjectural reconstruction of the ninth story and opting for partial repair up to the remaining sixth story. This approach embraced the cumulative layers of damage as an integral part of the monument's authentic history. Second, the ‘authenticity of material’ was maximized by increasing the reuse rate of original stone members to 47% to 81% and selectively integrating reversible modern technologies to ensure structural stability. Third, the ‘authenticity of process and record’ was established through a multidisciplinary decision-making framework and transparent documentation of the entire two-decade conservation project. In conclusion, the conservation of the Mireuksa Stone Pagoda is a monumental achievement that established practical conservation principles by optimizing international norms to fit local conditions. The derived principles align with the ‘Korean Principles for the Conservation of Heritage Values (2022)’ and will serve as an academic benchmark for sustainable architectural heritage conservation and authenticity assessment under the ‘National Heritage Framework (2024)’.

The reversion of Okinawa to the Japanese mainland in 1972 marked a crucial turning point in contemporary Okinawan architecture. Following 27 years of U.S. military administration, the Japanese architectural community‘s discussions on identity and regionality intensified. The Okinawa International Ocean Exposition (1975) rapidly expanded public development and tourism while promoting Japanese architects' entry, reinforcing Okinawa’s external dependence. This study examines how regionality was expressed through four distinct approaches in 1970s Okinawa. First, Kikutake Kiyonori's internationally oriented technological idealism utilized the Okinawan ocean as an experimental site detached from local contexts. Second, Kinjo Nobuyoshi explored Okinawa's inherent uniqueness by applying traditional elements to modern architecture, yet showed limitations in visual symbolization of tradition. Third, Kokuba Yukifusa brought mainland-acquired modernism back to Okinawa, translating regionality into spatial form through personal vernacular experience. Fourth, Atelier Zo advocated the 'heuristic method,' rediscovering local communities, engaging residents, and advancing the 'Reverse Disparity Theory', an alternative regionalism routed through Okinawa. By contrasting these approaches, this study reveals that expressions of regionality diverged according to architects' origins, education, networks, and perceptions of Okinawa.

This study examines the former Ssangyong Cement Mungyeong plant, located in Singi-ri, Mungyeong, which was constructed as part of the cement industry rehabilitation program led by the UNKRA in the aftermath of the Korean War and operated until 2018, along with its surrounding hinterland. It aims to analyze the transformation of a pre-existing rural area following the construction of a new cement plant during the post-war reconstruction period, as well as the spatial configuration of the industrial settlement formed around the plant. To this end, the study first reviews the construction process of post-war cement plants and the historical background of company housing in Korean industrial cities. It then analyzes the construction of the plant and company housing, as well as the changes in the surrounding area resulting from the plant’s expansion and transformation. Furthermore, by examining the spatial structure of the industrial settlement, the characteristics of the housing estates, and the dwelling types of individual housing units across multiple spatial scales, the study identifies the key spatial features of the industrial settlement. The findings reveal that, unlike the company towns of the Japanese colonial period, which were developed through comprehensive corporate planning, the industrial settlement formed around the cement plant in Mungyeong during the post-war reconstruction period evolved through the gradual insertion and addition of industrial facilities and housing estates into an existing rural landscape. As a result, while the settlement functioned as a community centered on a single industrial enterprise, it retained a semi-agricultural and semi-industrial character, demonstrating limitations in its transition into a fully developed industrial city.
